AMYLA Opens Its Doors to the Community
June 2008
This summer, the Adams Morgan community welcomed The Adams Morgan Youth Leadership Academy, (AMYLA) to the Northwest, Washington, D.C. Adams Morgan community! Beginning June 16th 2008, AMYLA began providing wrap-around, after school and summer youth services for Washington metropolitan area youth ages 13-18.
In the midst of an influx of commercial and residential development and diminishing social service programs west of 16th street, AMYLA was able to organize, fundraise and establish programs in less than a year. It successfully engaged residents, local community organizations and the Adams Morgan business community, and looks forward to building further relationships in the District.
“The support that we’ve received from our youth and families, volunteers, community activists and the Adams Morgan business community partnerships, political organizations and Ward 1 Councilmember Graham’s office has been paramount…there is no way we could have accomplished such a feat without their involvement”, says Nigel Okunubi, Founder and Program Director of AMYLA.
“It’s a true honor to be in a position to bring home all that I’ve had the privilege to learn and benefit from after a decade of experience working with youth locally and nationally. To be in a position to help positively shape and transform the lives of the next generation in our community is not an opportunity I take for granted!”
